Artist Statement
My work is about location. As a recent arrival to Canada, I'm looking to connect with the "recognizable". In using representable styles, I seek out the familiar, in family, friends, and extended family and associates. I seek empathy, interpretive and speculative as my challenges. In my dealings with my audience, I explore the obligations that relationshaips bring. I am constantly trading the consumption of time verses the quality of my paintings.
History & Education
I studied at Beijing’s Capital Mormal University obtaining my B.F.A. in 1995. I furthered my studies to receive my M.F.A. in 2002. More recently, I completed my post graduate certificate at Fanshawe College in London, ON., in 2010.
Among my influences, is the artist Egon Schiele. I am captivated by the energy he puts into his drawings. It’s his style of drawing; it’s openness and cleanliness that captures the personality of his models so wonderfully.
In Camille Pissarro, his landscapes draw me in and I use his defused light techniques for my own landscapes.
The family of Wyeths, Newell, Andrew and Jamie, have effected my paintings because of their realism. The richness of their paintings derives from layering detail upon detail, building their renderings up to dazzling paintings. Such talent!
My palette development can be attributed to Gustav Klimt. His rich sense of colour and complimentary colour arrangements are the driving force of my colour selections.
Early training in Chinese contemporary art derives from post communist exposure to Russian “social realism”. Mostly used for propaganda purposes, it’s execution and purpose was to communicate ideology to a illiterate population. By the eighties, with a great leap in literacy the style fell out of vogue and young Chinese artists were making the “Grand Tour” to Europe bringing the influences of Western Art to the oriental “eye”. Their published series of discoveries in Western Art shifted my aim and directions.
